Implications of being bicultural and/or bilingual. 

Introduction

In this blog you can read about the implications of being bicultural and/or bilingual. We need to adopt a critical position towards bilingualism based on our personal experiences and the main ideas which we can choose from different authors. Nowadays topics like multilingualism, monolingualism and bilingualism are so important because we are living in a globalized world. As colombias we need to realize that we have a hard work to do because we are late in many topics and it has many negative consequences on our development and the quantity and quality of opportunities which we can have abroad as a country and as individuals. 


General objective: 

Present the implications of being bicultural and/or bilingual. 

Differences between being bilingual and bicultural.

  • Some aspects of the bicultural are adaptable and controllable; the bicultural can adapt to the context and situation.
  • Bicultural bilinguals adapt to the cultural context they are in, as do monolinguals with their one language. 

Examples of being bilingual, bicultural, and both bilingual and bicultural.

Bilingual: Swiss Germans who speak both Swiss German and standard German but who are culturally Swiss. 

If we are colombian and learn and practice English with a really good level.

Bicultural: British expatriates in the United States. In the past, people who lived in the border between Colombia and Venezuela. 

Both bilingual and bicultural: immigrants, many of whom have acquired their second language in their country of adoption and who have acculturated into their new culture. Colombians in U.S.A

Conclusions

  1. Bilingual education programs should improve their proposals because the teaching-learning process isn't only about languages; we need to understand that languages allow us to communicate I mean to have good relationships, so, we need to be tolerant and respectful giving the same importance level to everyone.

  2. We should start to know about this topic because many time we can't identify the differences which are between the concepts as multilingualism, monolingualism and bilingualism, bilingual education, and globalization, as well as their relevance in the teaching of foreign languages in Colombia. In the world there are bilingual, bicultural, and both bilingual and bicultural people.

  3. Bilingualism in minority Amerindian or Creole languages needs that we give it the importance that it has; we need to allow our society to be better at bilingual education to achieve our goals and have a better world with more opportunities but with people who feel comfortable and part of it.
